The Journey to a $5.1M Offer: Scaling a Trades Company With Simple Systems
The Journey to a $5.1M Offer, Scaling With Systems, and What Came Next
I took a company from -$403,276 to $6.4M in revenue, got a $5.1M offer to buy it, and walked away.
Here is what scaling taught me about systems, freedom and ownership, and how I use those lessons to help business owners today.
Welcome to the Scale to Sale blog where we explore everything about scaling businesses to their maximum potential, selling for top dollar, and the systems that make it all possible. Hosted by Mark Crandall, founder of Scale to Sale Consulting, The Happy Check Podcast brings you real stories, strategies, and insights from the world of business growth.
I tell the full story on The Happy Check YouTube channel, including how customer testimonials drove that growth:
The Reality Behind Scaling Businesses
When I first started scaling, I was filled with excitement about growth and the dream of freedom. But the reality is not all sunshine and rainbows. As the business grew, I found myself feeling trapped by ownership despite my desire to escape it. That led me to a deeper passion: helping other entrepreneurs escape the same trap.
Scaling is not just about growing faster. It is about working smarter with the right systems in place to manage growth without losing your personal freedom.
Lessons Learned Over the Past 5 Years
Over the past 5 years, I’ve learned a ton about scaling, selling, and buying businesses. I have used these lessons to relaunch Scale to Sale Consulting and The Happy Check Podcast.
Key lessons include:
Add Ons: Adding new revenue streams through strategic products or services.
Efficiency: Learning to be lean while scaling. It is not about adding more staff; it is about optimizing systems and making each process more efficient.
When I started with one company, we were sitting at -$403,276. We grew it to $6.4M in revenue and drew a $5.1M offer to buy it, an offer I ultimately walked away from. This was not an accident. It was the result of Documented Reality and systemized growth.
Using Systems and Tools for Growth
In business, you don’t need expensive, high end software to succeed. Simplicity works. That is why I relied on systems like Go HighLevel CRM, Google and QuickBooks to streamline operations. These tools made all the difference in scaling quickly and efficiently without the “ad spend addiction.”
What’s to Come on The Happy Check Podcast
In future episodes of The Happy Check Podcast, we will dive deeper into the world of scaling businesses and preparing them for sale:

The Mission Behind Scale the Rabbit
Scale the Rabbit is more than just a metaphor. It is a movement focused on:
Educating children on entrepreneurship.
Teaching parents about vital topics like youth safety.
Supporting anti human trafficking initiatives by donating a portion of profits.
With my background in social work and therapy, I have seen the power of using business as a tool for social good. This is the heart behind everything we do.
What Clients Say
Sarah Jones had wanted to get her business online for a long time and did not know how to start a landing page. We built two full landing pages and every automation in Go HighLevel, then recorded a walkthrough so she was comfortable running it herself. In her words:
"He did a great job and I'll definitely be using him again."
Bud Heaton talks about spotting the small opportunities most owners overlook: where leads come from, communication, the sales process and the systems behind it. His phrase for it:
"Get the water to the end of the road, so to speak."

Looking Forward: Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, my vision for Scale to Sale Consulting is about creating a sustainable future for entrepreneurs and their families. We are focused on helping business owners scale organically and exit their companies with freedom. In 15 years, I envision a world where every business is built on the principles of efficiency, simplicity, and Documented Reality.
